Family Newsletter

Dear Families,
Thank you all for coming to our Reading Restaurant last week and for helping us make it another great success!  The students were so proud to showcase their writing and they did an outstanding job, working together in our class restaurant.  I am so proud of them all and I know you are as well.

I will post pictures as soon as I have them.  I am having some technical difficulties at the moment.

Before our family celebration on Thursday, the students had the opportunity to practice with students from Team Horizon.  Here are some pictures from that special event:

A little while ago, Ms. Fisher's and my class had a visit from the Flynn Theater.  We learned how to use dance and movements to enact a book.  The book was "The Tiny Seed" by Eric Carle.  The kids really got into it and showed great creativity and risk-taking.

Your child also brought home some grass that we started growing in class.  I hope you will help your child continue to care for this at home; perhaps even try out some new hair-cuts since we decided to grow the grass on top of a photo of your child on the cup.  Have fun!

We raised over $10,000 for the American Heart Association at ABS!  Thank you for your generous support.  As promised, Ms. Porter, Ms. Filion and Mr. King had pies thrown into their faces!!

We celebrated Arbor Day last Friday.  We were fortunate to gather outside because the rain stopped and the sun came out.  Harmony students led the "rain song" and the entire school followed along.  It was a terrific afternoon outside together.

Upcoming Events & Reminders:

  • Last day of school: June 14th (dismissal at 11:30).  Please let me know if your child needs a bagged/packed lunch from our cafeteria
  • Book Fair: We will visit the Book Fair on Wednesday May 29th between 1:45-2:15.  Fliers and information will be sent home in your child's Friday folder this week.
  • No School on Monday, May 27th (Memorial Day)
  • Book Mobile: The local library's summer Book Mobile will visit ABS on Monday, June 3rd.  We will learn more about the library's summer reading program.  Harmony teachers strongly encourage families to participate in this wonderful reading challenge over the summer to stay engaged in learning and reading while also preventing "the summer slide" (regression in reading over the summer)
  • WCS Chorus Concert: We will visit WCS for the annual WCS Spring concert.  It is on Wednesday, June 5th.  Dismissal will be from WCS.  As in the past, all parent pick-ups will be in the lobby/front office of WCS.  Part 2 students will return to ABS and all other students will board their regular buses at WCS.
  • Fun Day: Fun Day (our special outdoor field-day) is scheduled for June 7th at WCS between 9-11.  More information will follow soon.

Reading Restaurant

Dear Families,

The students are so excited to invite you all to our Reading Restaurant on Thursday this week.  We have two sessions and your child and family were assigned a specific time-slot.

Please arrive 5 minutes early.  That way, your child can settle in, see his/her friends and get everything ready.  Please wait outside in our kiva.  The host/hostess will seat you and your family.

It is going to be crowded on Harmony.  Please do not be shy, but walk all the way down to our classroom and wait outside the door to be seated.  Thank you:)

Most kids dress up for this event.  Most kids do not wear regular school clothes/athletic attire.  I wanted you to know so your child will feel comfortable during our time here.

Please also keep in mind that some kids feel very nervous about this event.  This is a big event and they are, after all, only first and second graders.  We have discussed the different feelings we can feel before an event like this, and some of the emotions shared were feeling scared that a lot of people will be here, nervousness about making a mistake, such as giving out the wrong story, or not knowing a parent's name, etc.  Please check in with your child at home.  I did my best explaining that we're all in this as a team, we're helping each other and we're here to celebrate our amazing learning together!  I also told the kids that you are going to be the best guests anyone could have because you will help them too, if they need it.

Thanks for helping us make this a success for all!!
