Family Newsletter

 Dear Families,

Here is our week in review:

Social-Emotional Learning:

  • This week, the students learned more about how to effectively manage their emotions, especially when they are experiencing very strong emotions.  We specifically discussed situations that can cause a feeling of embarrassment or anger, such as when we say something we regret (and thus feel embarrassed) or when we knock something over (perhaps by accident).  The students learned that they can learn to manage these strong reactions and feelings.  They also learned that being aware of how others might feel can help us be good friends and role models by providing support and thereby helping other manage their reactions more efficiently.  We played the game pedoodle (a guessing game when you substitute a word with pedoodle) to practice what we can do as a team/group to help each other navigate these strong feelings.  As always, the students did an outstanding job helping each other!

  • This week, the students learned about mindfulness and meditation from two peers in our class!  Our friends led the class in different breathing techniques and calming strategies.  It was wonderful and we learned so much from our friends.  Thank you for teaching us all about mindfulness and meditation!

Reading:

  • End-of-the-year reading assessments continued this week along with opportunities for the students to read independently and with partners.

  • All library books were due this week.  If your child still has books at home, please return them to school as soon as possible so Mrs. Clopton can get them ready for next year!  Thank you.

Writing:

  • We started a new poetry writing unit.  This week, the students were partnered up and wrote rhyming poems together.  We will illustrate each other’s poems next week. The students wrote very creative and funny poems.  We look forward to sharing these with you too at our Celebration of Learning ( see date/time below).

Math:

  • This week, second grade mathematicians continued to develop a deeper understanding of arrays and geometric shapes.  They worked in small groups to build arrays with tiles and wrote matching equations.

  • Second grade mathematicians also had a chance to review familiar skills and concepts while rotating through stations and workplaces.

Field trip:

  • Our field trip to Shelburne Museum was a huge success!  Thank you to all parent volunteers who came along too.  We could not have done this without you all.  Here is a link to some pictures from this special day:
