Weekly Update

Dear Families,
We have had another exciting week in our busy classroom.
This week, we published new podcasting strands and movies. Please scroll down on this blog to see some of these or visit our podcasting library to see more. We are very proud. When we podcast, we primarily focus upon fluency; the ability to make the reading sound like the spoken language with correct phrasing and intonation. We also use podcasting to get to know each other. Soon, you will see student interviews from around the school and our community. Stay tuned.
Our school has a very special Harvest Festival and Celebration every year. This year, our "Stone Soup" celebration will be held on October 18th during our regular lunch times (12:50-1:15pm). The school is looking for volunteers to serve the food. Please let me know if you are interested in helping us. The event is held at our school garden. Students are encouraged to bring in their own bowl (or cup) and spoon for lunch. If your family wishes to contribute vegetables for this school soup, please bring them in on the 14th of October. Thank you. If you have an questions, please let me know.
In Writer's Workshop, the students continued working on their small moment stories, learning how to strech out their stories with pictures and words. Please scroll down in this blog to see our visual aid for this type of writing. We hope nto podcast our constructed responses soon. Thank you parent volunteers for making this happen so soon!
In Reader's Workshop, the students continued their guided reading groups this week. The students will take home new books next week. Thank you for sending in last week's books already. As we share these instructional books with the rest of the school, we appreciate your prompt return. If your child is currently reading chapter books, please know that your child will not bring home a new guided reading book each week. As these books are longer, we need more time conferring and discussing these books. Please let me know if the books your child takes home do not work well for you. I am happy to help.
In math, 1st grade mathematicians have learned about math problem-solving and dyad partnerships. Please click here to access our first grade math blog for more information.
As we are so busy and publish so many things each week, I just want to encourage parents and students to check this blog many times each week as we publish many times-not just on Thursdays. Simply scroll down to see what we have been up to. Thank you.
In our classroom, we invite Guest Readers to read a special book aloud to the students. The Guest Reader is like a Mystery Reader and the students have to guess the reader's identity. I give several clues and the students make guesses. As more clues are presented, former options and names are eliminated based upon the new information given. This week, we had a very special Guest Reader. One of our student's dad joined our classroom from Kuwait and read us a Clifford book! It was a wonderful celebration of literacy, global connections and technology! We are so happy to participate in this venture. Thank you Sam Mathiowetz for finding time in your busy day to read to our class.
Here are some pictures. We are also happy to announce that the students have written a piece about this for our school newspaper Blue & Gold. We will let you know when it is published.
